in Andrew’s own words…

Hello!  I would like to introduce myself to you and tell you a little bit about me.  My Name is Andrew Victor Vasek.  I am nineteen years old and I am in my second semester at Wharton County Junior College.  I have lived in Wadsworth all of my life with my parents, Charles and Nancy Vasek.  I have an older brother, Brad, and an older sister, Megan.  I also live with several pets, four dogs and one cat!

I attend Christ Episcopal Church where I have been a member of the youth group, an acolyte and an usher.  I even sometimes help my mom with Altar Guild duties!

I played little league baseball for nine years and soccer for two years.  I love to go fishing with my grandmother whenever we are able.  I enjoy doing anything that is outside.

I was member of the Wadsworth 4-H for ten years.  I raised meat pens rabbits every year that I was in 4-H.  When I was nine I won Reserve Champion in Showmanship in the Intermediate Division.  My junior year, with a lot of hard work, I was fortunate enough to win Reserve Champion with my rabbits.  It was quite a thrill. I have also done the calf scramble and was lucky enough to catch a calf several times.  I believe that I have learned many life lessons by raising rabbits for the fair.  I have learned that sometimes no matter how hard you try, you just might not win.   Winning isn’t everything but trying to do your best is the only way to succeed.  This applies not only at the fair but in everything that you face in life.

Playing football in High School was a big turning point for me in school.  Beginning my junior year I was a starter on Bay City High School Varsity team.  Up until then my grades were not something that I was proud of.  Being a part of the team made me want to do better so that I could play each week, and my grades started to improve.  I played the offensive line and defensive tackle my junior year.  I was selected to the All District and County second team that year.  My senior year I played defensive tackle.  I was the only member of the Blackcats to make All District first team.  I also made the All County first team.  I also learned that same “winning isn’t everything” lesson in football!  But, we never gave up trying.  We played to win even if we didn’t.  Learning not only to depend on others, but being dependable to others, is something that football has taught me.

I was a volunteer for Bay City Parks and Recreation for their summer camp program for several years.  When I was in eighth I was hired to be a summer camp counselor and have done this for five years. I have a great time being with the little kids and teaching them fun games to play and going on the field trips with them.

My goal for the future is that I will graduate from college and eventually become a coach and return to Bay City.  I would like to teach others how it feels to be a part of something and hopefully be able to contribute to this community.

The high cost of college tuition and books will put a strain on my family.  Receiving this scholarship would certainly help my goal become a reality.  I greatly appreciate being considered for this scholarship.  If I am lucky enough to be a recipient, I will do my very best to make you proud of me.
